The AFM measures incoming air using a spring-loaded door connected to a potentiometer. At low RPMs and partial throttle, where the door is barely open, this mechanical restriction is at its worst, dulling throttle response and making the engine feel sluggish and unresponsive right where you feel it most. At wide open throttle, the AFM cannot accurately read airflow at all, forcing the ECU into a rich, safe-running condition to avoid knock.
