HPDE for Beginners: A Comprehensive Overview
Share
Before you think about racing and driving on a race track you should think of High Performance Driver Education (HPDE). HPDE is a program designed to provide drivers with advanced skills and techniques for driving at high speeds on a race track or closed course. The primary goal of HPDE is to improve driving skills, enhance vehicle control, and promote safe and responsible high-speed driving.
Here are some key aspects of High Performance Driver Education:
-
Skills Development: When I took my first HPDE class, I thought I knew how to drive a car on a race track. Surprise Surprise, I did not. Eventually I accepted that I had to learn it…HPDE focuses on teaching participants advanced driving techniques, including proper racing lines, braking, cornering, and overall vehicle dynamics.
-
Classroom Instruction: Many HPDE programs include classroom sessions where instructors discuss theory, rules, and safety guidelines related to high-performance driving. Some instructors are better than others, but the content is pretty much the same. Students should definitely pay attention to these classes. You could save yourself some time and effort wasted.
-
On-Track Sessions: Participants get practical experience on a race track or closed course under the guidance of experienced instructors. These sessions often involve driving your car with an instructor on-board. You will have a headset usually provided by your instructor to communicate with them.
Students are encouraged to remember that this is not a race! It is a classroom, listen and learn, practice what you learned in class. -
Vehicle Requirements: Participants typically use their own vehicles, which may undergo safety inspections to ensure they meet track standards. Helmets are usually required, and other safety gear may be recommended.
Brakes are the first thing to go, make sure that you have new pads and preferably brake pads made for the track. Check out our brake pad selection, PFC 08 is my personal favorite. -
Skill Levels:
- Novice/Beginner: Geared towards those with little or no track experience. Instructors closely guide participants.
- Intermediate: For drivers with some track experience who are looking to improve their skills. More independent driving is involved.
- Advanced/Expert: Designed for experienced drivers seeking to further refine their high-performance driving abilities. Participants may have more freedom on the track.
-
Where to Practice HPDE:
-
Race Tracks: HPDE events are often held at dedicated race tracks or closed courses. Check with local tracks or motorsports organizations for scheduled events.
Summit Point Motorsports Park is my local track and I typically sign up with my local PCA Potomac or RTR clubs. - Before participating in HPDE, it's important to check the specific requirements of the program and ensure your vehicle meets safety standards. Additionally, participants should be aware of any age or licensing restrictions imposed by the organizing body.
