Karting Gear Essentials: Suits, Gloves, and Balaclavas for the Track

Karting is where most racers start, and where plenty of experienced drivers stay for the pure, unfiltered feel of it. The gear is lighter and more flexible than full circuit racing equipment, but it still needs to fit right and meet the rules of whatever series or club you're running with. Here's a rundown of the essentials.
The Suit Is Built for Movement First
Kart racing suits prioritize flexibility and abrasion resistance over the heavier fire ratings used in circuit racing, since karting's risk profile leans toward slides and contact with the track rather than engine fires. A good kart suit should let you move freely through the shoulders and hips — you'll feel any restriction immediately in a kart's tight, fast steering inputs. CIK-FIA Level 2 is the rating to look for if you're racing competitively.

Gloves Need Thin, Direct Feel
Karts have quick, direct steering with very little power assist, so glove feel matters more here than in almost any other discipline — thick padding that works fine on a circuit racing wheel will dull the feedback you need on a kart. Look for thin palm material with strong grip rather than heavily padded knuckles.

Balaclavas Solve a Real Problem
A balaclava under a karting helmet does double duty: it keeps sweat out of your eyes during a hot session and acts as a fire-resistant barrier between your skin and the helmet's interior padding. Summer-weight versions are noticeably more breathable than standard balaclavas and are worth the upgrade if you're racing through warmer months.

Helmet Shields Take More Abuse Than You'd Think
Kart helmet shields scratch and fog faster than circuit racing shields, partly because karts run lower to the ground and kick up more debris, and partly because karting sessions often run back-to-back with little time to clean a shield between heats. Keep at least one spare on hand — a scratched or fogged shield in changing light is a real visibility hazard, not just a cosmetic annoyance.

The Bottom Line
Karting gear is lighter and more flexible by design, but it still needs to fit well and hold up to back-to-back sessions. Get a suit and gloves that move with you, keep spares of the small consumables, and the gear will stay out of the way of what actually matters — driving.
