320mm vs. 350mm Steering Wheels: What Size Is Best?

Diameter is the spec that changes how a car feels more than any other part of a steering wheel. It's also the one most people guess at, usually by picking whatever looks right in photos. Thirty millimetres doesn't sound like much — it's just over an inch — but it's the difference between a wheel that suits your car and one you quietly dislike every time you drive.
Here's how to get it right.
What Diameter Actually Changes
Two things, and they pull in opposite directions.
Leverage. A steering wheel is a lever. The bigger the circle, the more mechanical advantage your arms have over the steering rack, and the less effort it takes to turn the wheels. Shrink the diameter and every input gets physically heavier.
Response. A smaller wheel means your hands travel a shorter arc for the same amount of steering angle. The car feels like it reacts faster, because you're covering the same lock in less hand movement.
That's the entire trade. Smaller is quicker but heavier; larger is easier but slower. Everything else — which cars suit which size, why race cars run small wheels — falls out of those two facts.
The Deciding Factor Is Power Steering
Before you think about anything else, answer this one question: does the car have power assistance?
If it does, you have room to go smaller. The pump is doing the heavy lifting, so losing some leverage costs you comfort you weren't using. Dropping from 350 mm to 320 mm gets you noticeably quicker response for very little penalty.
If it doesn't — an air-cooled 911, an early BMW, most pre-1980s sports cars, plenty of stripped race cars — leverage is not optional. Parking manoeuvres and slow hairpins get genuinely tiring, and heavy steering is fatiguing over a full session in a way that's easy to underestimate when you're testing a wheel in your living room. Stay at 350 mm or go larger.
The Case for 350 mm
350 mm is the default for good reason. It suits the widest range of cars, it's the size most classic sports cars, sedans and GT cars were designed around, and it's the safe answer whenever you're unsure.
Choose 350 mm if:
- The car has no power steering, or heavy steering even with it
- It's a larger sedan, GT car or anything with real front-end weight
- You do long drives and want comfort over sharpness
- You're replacing a factory wheel and want a similar feel
The Case for 320 mm
320 mm is the enthusiast's size. It makes a car feel more alert without being extreme, and it frees up a little more thigh and knee room — which matters if you're tall, if you've fitted a fixed-back seat, or if you're getting in and out over a cage.
Choose 320 mm if:
- The car has power steering
- It's a compact or lightweight car
- You want quicker response for track or spirited road driving
- You need clearance getting in and out

Going Smaller: 300 and 330 mm
Below 320 mm you're into specialist territory, and the effort penalty gets real. It works in genuinely light cars with assisted steering, and it works where quick corrections matter more than comfort.

Going Larger: 370 mm and Up
Bigger than 350 mm is a deliberate choice, not a compromise. It's the right answer in large unassisted classics and in GT cars where the driving position is laid back and the wheel sits further away.

Formula Wheels Play by Different Rules
If you've seen race cars running 250 mm wheels and wondered why the same logic doesn't apply to you, the answer is that those cars have steering racks geared for it and drivers who never take their hands off the rim.
MOMO's Formula range — the MOD.12 at 250 mm and the MOD.27 at 270 or 290 mm — uses D-shaped rims for leg clearance in tight cockpits. They're also not pre-drilled and mount to 3-hole quick-release adapters rather than the standard 6-bolt pattern, so they're not a drop-in option for a road car.
Don't Judge Size by Rim Thickness
One thing that catches people out: a thick-rimmed 350 mm wheel and a thin-rimmed 350 mm wheel measure the same but feel completely different in your hands. The thick rim reads as more substantial and more planted; the thin rim as lighter and more vintage.

A Quick Way to Decide
- Unassisted classic or heavy sedan: 350 mm minimum, consider 370 mm.
- Modern street car with power steering: 350 mm for comfort, 320 mm for sharpness.
- Track car with assistance: 320 mm.
- Track car without assistance: 350 mm — you'll want the leverage by lap ten.
- Light sports car: 300–320 mm.
- Tight cockpit or cage: 320 mm, or a flat-bottom wheel like the MOD.88.
The Bottom Line
Let the car decide, not the photos. Power steering earns you the option of going smaller; without it, leverage wins and you should stay at 350 mm. And if you're between the two, 350 mm is the size that suits more cars and more drivers — it's the default for a reason.
