MOMO Prototipo Steering Wheel for Porsche 911

MOMO and Porsche have been paired for so long that a Prototipo in a 911 barely registers as a modification — it reads as correct. But "a MOMO" isn't one decision. The right wheel for a 1973 2.7 is not the right wheel for a 997 track car, and the hub matters as much as the rim.

Here's how to approach it by generation.

First: The Hub Sets the Depth

On a 911 more than most cars, the hub adapter is half the decision, because it determines how far the wheel sits from your chest.

We stock two MOMO adapters listed for the 911: the L231 with an extended base, which brings the wheel toward the driver, and the C231 short version, which keeps it recessed. There's also an OMP adapter specific to the 1974–88 cars.

Choose the extended base if you run a fixed-back seat, sit further back, or find yourself reaching. Choose the short one if the factory position already suited you and you just want a better rim.

For the 997 — and the Cayman — we carry the MOMO 8017 and the OMP VW MK5/6 & Porsche 997/Cayman adapter. If you're running a 914/4 or a 924/944, we stock the MOMO 8002 and the MOMO 8010 respectively.

If you're on a 964, 993 or 996, get in touch before ordering. Our hub listings specify 911 generically, 1974–88, and 997 — so rather than guess from a product title, let us confirm the right part for your exact car and year. A wrong hub is the most annoying possible way to stall a simple upgrade.

Air-Cooled Cars (Pre-1989): The Classic Answer

This is Prototipo territory, and it isn't nostalgia — the thick top-grain leather rim and three drilled spokes genuinely suit the cabin of an early 911 better than anything modern does.

Two things to know about these cars. First, they don't have power steering, so stay at 350 mm or larger — you want the leverage, particularly at parking speeds with wide front tyres. Second, the factory wheel sat quite close to the driver, so a shallow modern wheel can feel oddly distant. Either pair a standard wheel with the extended-base hub, or use a dished wheel.

The Prototipo at 350 mm is the reference answer, available with black or silver spokes. If you'd rather it looked lived-in from day one, the Prototipo Heritage uses distressed leather with contrasting white stitching. And if you want the thin-rim, more elegant look instead, the Montecarlo is the alternative — our head-to-head comparison covers the difference in detail.

964 and 993: The Crossover Generations

These are the cars where the decision gets more interesting, because they sit between eras — modern enough to drive daily, classic enough that a period wheel still looks right.

Power assistance arrived on the 911 with the 964, which changes the sizing advice: you now have the option of going to 320 mm for quicker response without paying for it in steering effort. That opens up the Montecarlo in 320 mm, or the Tuner if you want something cleaner and more modern-looking.

Many 964s and 993s are also driven hard, and this is where the Montecarlo Alcantara earns its place — classic thin-rim shape, but with grip that holds up through gloves on a track day.

Airbag note: later 964s and the 993 were fitted with driver's airbags. Fitting an aftermarket wheel means removing that airbag — read our install guide for what that involves before you commit.

996 and 997: Modern Cars, Modern Choices

The water-cooled cars have power steering, airbags and a driving position that's already close to right, so the reasoning inverts: you're not fixing a problem, you're upgrading feel and appearance.

Because the factory position is generally good, you don't need much dish — favour a shallower wheel and a short hub. And because the interiors are modern, a heavily patinated classic wheel can look out of place; the cleaner options tend to work better.

For a road-driven 996 or 997, the Prototipo 6C Carbon is the standout — the classic 350 mm Prototipo silhouette in lightweight carbon-fibre construction, which sits far more naturally in a modern cabin than a wood or distressed-leather rim. The Nero is the understated alternative, all-black leather with Alcantara inserts and chrome trim at the grips.

Track and Club-Race 911s

If the car runs PCA club events, HPDE or a track series, the priorities shift entirely: grip through gloves, a diameter that suits fast corrections, and getting in and out of a caged car.

The MOD.78 in suede is the sensible default — MOMO positions it for GT and sedan race cars, it comes in 320 mm or 350 mm, and the aluminium spokes keep it light. If leg clearance getting past the wheel in a helmet and HANS is an issue, the MOD.88 adds a flat bottom to the same anatomic shape.

For an early unassisted car on track, the MOD.08 is hard to beat: 350 mm for leverage and a 90 mm dish that lets you sit properly back in a fixed-back seat.

Restomods and Outlaw Builds

If the car is going the other way — backdated, hot-rodded, unapologetically period — the Heritage range is where to look. The Heritage California Wood uses a handcrafted mahogany rim with back finger grooves, and the Heritage Indy is solid mahogany with brushed silver spokes. Both are larger-diameter, thinner-gripped wheels, which is exactly right for an unassisted car.

The Prototipo 370 is worth a look too — 370 mm of leverage in the classic shape, genuinely useful on a heavy-steering backdate.

Quick Picks by Car

The Bottom Line

Match the wheel to the era of the car and the hub to the exact chassis. Unassisted cars want 350 mm or more; assisted cars can go to 320 mm. And on anything from the 964 onward, settle the airbag question before you order rather than after the parts arrive.
