Racing Harnesses Explained: 3-Point vs. 5-Point vs. 6-Point and HANS Compatibility

A harness does one job: keep you exactly where you need to be when the car decelerates faster than your body wants to. The factory three-point belt isn't built for that, which is why almost every step up in track driving eventually involves a harness upgrade.

3-Point vs. 5-Point vs. 6-Point
Each step up trades a little convenience for meaningfully better restraint.
A bolt-in 3-point harness replaces the factory belt geometry with stiffer, track-rated webbing. It's the simplest and cheapest step, and a common choice for street cars doing occasional HPDE.
A 5-point adds a lap belt and a single anti-submarine crotch strap, locking the pelvis in place far more effectively under hard braking. "Submarining" — sliding forward and down underneath the lap belt in a frontal impact — is the failure mode that strap exists to prevent, and it's a genuinely dangerous one.
A 6-point splits that single strap into two for better load distribution and less pressure in one place. It's the standard in most wheel-to-wheel racing classes.

2-Inch or 3-Inch Webbing?
Wider webbing spreads impact load over more of your body, which is why 3-inch belts have been the traditional competition choice. But width interacts with head-and-neck restraints: many modern FIA harnesses use 2-inch shoulder straps specifically because they sit correctly on the yokes of a HANS or hybrid device, where a 3-inch strap can bunch or slip.
If you run an FHR device, follow the harness manufacturer's guidance rather than assuming wider is better. If you don't, 3-inch shoulder straps are a reasonable default.
FIA Dates and What They Mean
Look for an FIA 8853-2016 rating on any harness intended for serious competition. It's stamped on a tag sewn into the webbing along with an expiration date, typically a set number of years from manufacture.
Sanctioning bodies check that tag at tech inspection, and an expired harness will get you turned away regardless of how good it looks. This isn't bureaucratic box-checking: webbing degrades from UV exposure, sweat, and simple use, even if it has never been in an impact. A harness that has spent three summers in a car parked outside is measurably weaker than the date-code alone suggests.
Buying used is a false economy here. You're inheriting an unknown history on a part whose failure mode is catastrophic, to save a couple of hundred dollars.

HANS Compatibility Isn't Automatic
If you run a head-and-neck restraint — and on track you should — the harness has to be built for it. The shoulder belts need to route over the FHR yokes without rolling or bunching, which generally means flat, HANS-specific hardware rather than a standard latch, and the 2-inch shoulder width mentioned above.
Endurance-style harnesses are typically designed around FHR use from the start, which is why they're the safer purchase if you're running one. Retrofitting a device to a harness that wasn't designed for it tends to produce exactly the strap geometry you're trying to avoid.
Street Harnesses: Read the Fine Print
Bolt-in "tuning" harnesses install to existing factory mounting points and are an easy upgrade for a weekend car. But manufacturers are explicit about their intended use — OMP states plainly that its tuning harnesses are "intended for off-road use" and "not applicable nor intended for street or highway use."
That's the manufacturer's own position, and it's worth taking seriously before a harness becomes your daily restraint. A four-point harness without an anti-submarine strap can, in some frontal impacts, hold your torso while allowing your pelvis to slide — which is why the step from four to five points matters more than the numbers suggest.

Don't Overlook Arm Restraints
If you're running anything with rollover risk — particularly an open car — arm restraints keep your arms inside the cockpit during a roll. They're a small, cheap piece of gear that's easy to overlook until the moment you'd need them, and they're mandatory in several classes.

The Seat and the Harness Are One Decision
A harness and a bucket seat are designed to work together. The shell has slots cut through it so the belts pass through the seat rather than around it, which is what puts the lap belt on your pelvis instead of your abdomen.
Fit a harness to a stock seat and you lose most of that. If you're buying both, buy them as a pair — our Racing Seats 101 covers choosing the shell.
The Bottom Line
Match the point count and rating to what your racing actually requires, check the FIA expiration date before every season, and treat HANS compatibility as a purchase criterion rather than something to sort out later.
