Earlier this year I lost the brakes going into Turn 1 at Summit Point Main at 128 mph. The car went off, dug in, and rolled. I walked away. I'll write the full breakdown of what failed and how to avoid it in a separate post — that's a braking story, and it deserves its own space.

This post is about the other half: what happened inside the car once physics took over. Because I have the onboard footage, and it changed how I think about safety equipment. Not in an abstract, read-the-rulebook way. In a "look at where my body actually went" way.

What the Footage Actually Shows

Look at the frame above. The car is upside down. My arms are off the wheel and flailing. My torso has come out of the seat. I'm being held by a factory three-point belt and a pretensioner, and both did their job — they kept me in the car. But keeping you in the car and keeping you in the seat are two completely different problems, and a three-point belt only solves the first one.

Here's the part that gets my attention: my helmet is against the roof lining. In a stock car with a stock roof, the only thing between my head and the ground was sheet metal and a headliner. If the roof had crushed another few inches, the story ends differently. This isn't a hypothetical about roll protection. This is a photograph of the exact clearance I had, which was almost none.

And then you slide. Inverted, through dirt and grass, for what feels like a very long time, with your body loose in a stock seat and your head unsupported. That's the moment the gear either works or it doesn't.

So let's talk about the five things that actually protect you, in the order they matter, and why the industry treats them as one system instead of five purchases.

The System Rule: These Five Things Only Work Together

The single most important idea in this entire article is that racing safety equipment is designed as a chain, and installing one link in isolation can make you less safe than doing nothing.

A five- or six-point harness in a stock seat is the textbook example. The harness pulls you down and back into a seat that has no proper shoulder-belt pass-throughs, a reclining back that flexes under load, and no lateral containment. In a hard hit, you can submarine under a lap belt that has the wrong geometry, or the seat back can fold and change every belt angle at once. A stock three-point belt in a stock seat is a validated system. A race harness in a stock seat is not a system at all — it's parts.

The same logic runs through the whole chain. A halo seat needs enough cockpit height to fit. A harness needs a structurally sound mounting point behind you, which usually means a bar or a cage, not a bolt through the parcel shelf. Roll protection needs enough headroom that your helmet clears the structure. Most head and neck restraints need a harness to hold them down — though as you'll see below, there's one important exception, and it's the reason a stock-car driver isn't stuck waiting.

1. Roll Protection Comes First

This is the one I'm most direct about after my crash.

What I will tell you is why it comes first in the order of operations. Every other piece of safety gear on this list assumes the survival cell around you holds its shape. The seat, the harness and the restraint all work by keeping your body in a fixed position relative to the car. If the roof folds into that position, none of it helps.

Two practical points before you spend anything:

A harness bar is not a roll bar. This confuses a lot of people, and the confusion is dangerous. A harness bar exists to give your shoulder belts a correctly located, structurally sound mounting point at the right height and angle behind the seat. That's it. It is not designed, tested or certified to support the weight of the car in an inversion, and it does not give you roof clearance. Products like the Brey Krause bars below are excellent at the job they're built for — locating harnesses properly — and useless at the job they're not.

2. The Seat: Where Your Body Actually Lives

Look at that second frame again — the one where I'm out of the seat with my arms loose. A stock sport seat is designed to hold you comfortably under normal driving loads and to work with a three-point belt. It is not designed to keep your torso located under a rollover, and it has no shoulder-belt pass-throughs for a harness.

A proper fixed-back bucket does three things a stock seat can't. It locates your hips and torso precisely so belt geometry stays correct. It gives you lateral containment through high side bolsters so you're not bracing against the wheel to hold yourself up. And it provides correctly positioned shoulder-belt slots so a harness can sit where it's designed to sit.

Homologation and dates. Most seats you'll buy carry FIA 8855-1999, which is valid for five years from the tag date. The newer FIA 8855-2021 and the professional-level FIA 8862-2009 standards both carry ten-year tags. For HPDE this is often about club rules rather than law, but check the tag before you buy a used seat — an expired seat is a seat you can't run in most competition contexts and one that has aged out of its intended service life.

Halo or no halo? A halo (full-containment) seat adds lateral head protection, which matters enormously in a side impact and in the kind of rolling, sliding event I had. The seat is only half the purchase. It has to be attached to the car properly, and that means side mounts and either a fixed base or a slider. Universal side mounts work if you're comfortable fabricating; a car-specific bracket takes the guesswork out. If you share the car with an instructor or a second driver, budget for a slider — but understand that a slider raises your seating position, which brings us right back to helmet clearance. 3. The Harness: Holding You Where the Seat Put You

A harness does what my three-point belt couldn't: it holds your pelvis and both shoulders against the seat so your torso stays put. The lap belts pull down across your hip bones, the shoulder belts pull back into the seat, and the anti-submarine belt keeps you from sliding forward and under the lap belt in a frontal impact. That last one is the piece people skip and shouldn't.

Points. Six-point is the standard for a modern build — two lap, two shoulder, two anti-sub — and it's what a head and neck restraint expects. Five-point with a single anti-sub strap is still legitimate. Four-point harnesses without any anti-sub provision are the ones to be careful with: without a crotch strap, a hard frontal hit can pull the lap belt up off your hips and onto your abdomen.

Width. Three-inch shoulder belts spread load over more area, but two-inch belts are the ones designed to work correctly with an FHR device — the narrower belt sits properly on the shoulder pads of the restraint. If you're buying a harness to use with a HANS-type device, two-inch shoulder belts are usually the right call. Dates, and this one is strict. FIA 8853-2016 harnesses are valid for five years, counted from January 1 of the year after manufacture — so a belt made in 2026 runs through the end of 2031. SFI 16.1 and 16.5 belts are only good for two years from the date of manufacture punched on the tag. Webbing degrades from UV, sweat and abrasion whether you use it or not. Buy new, check the tag on arrival, and put the expiry in your calendar.

Mounting matters as much as the belt. Shoulder belts want to run roughly level to slightly downward from your shoulders to the mounting point — never sharply upward, which can compress your spine in an impact. Lap belts want to sit at roughly 45 to 60 degrees across your hips. Every mounting point needs a proper eye bolt with a backing plate, or a bar designed for the job. A harness bolted to unreinforced sheet metal will tear out.

4. The Head and Neck Restraint: The Cheapest Life Insurance in Motorsport

A frontal head restraint — HANS, FHR, whatever your club calls it — addresses the injury that killed drivers for decades. Once your torso is held against the seat, your head is the only heavy thing still free to move, and it's sitting on top of your neck with a helmet adding mass to it. In a frontal impact, the body stops and the head keeps going. That's the mechanism behind basilar skull fracture, and it's the reason head and neck restraints became mandatory across professional motorsport.

The device sits on your shoulders and tethers to two anchor posts on your helmet. When you decelerate, the tethers limit how far your head can pitch forward and transfer that load into your shoulders and chest instead of your neck. Every device needs a helmet with M6 threaded inserts, which every Snell SA and FIA auto helmet has had since the SA2015 generation, and the anchor posts are usually a separate purchase. You Can Buy This Before You Build the Car

This is the part most HPDE drivers don't know, and it's the most useful thing in this article.

There are two families of head and neck restraint. The classic yoke-style device — HANS and the Stand 21 FHR — sits under your shoulder belts, and the belts are what hold it down. Those require a five-, six- or eight-point harness. No harness, no protection.

The second family works differently. Simpson's Hybrid devices strap to your body rather than relying on belts to pin them, and the Hybrid S is FIA and SFI approved and third-party tested for use with a standard three-point belt using the same FMVSS208 procedure the OEMs use. In that testing it produced a significant reduction in neck tension compared to a helmet on a three-point belt alone.

Read that again if you're running a stock car in White or Blue. It means the single most important piece of crash protection on this list — the one that addresses the injury mechanism that killed drivers for decades — does not require you to cage the car, replace the seat, or fit a harness first. You can buy it this week and use it at your next event. For DE instructors sitting in the right seat of student cars on factory belts, it's the only option that works at all.

If You Already Run a Harness

With a proper five- or six-point harness, the yoke-style devices open up, and they're lighter, cooler and less expensive. The Stand 21 Club 3 is dual-homologated to FIA 8858-2010 and SFI 38.1, which means it's accepted essentially everywhere, and at $399 it's the cheapest serious protection in this entire article.

20 or 30 degrees? The number is the shoulder angle of the device, and it should match how you sit. Twenty degrees suits an upright touring-car position — most of us. Thirty degrees suits a laid-back formula or prototype seating angle, and it's also the better fit if you have a broader chest or if a standard device pushes uncomfortably against the back of your head.

Post anchor or Quick Click? Post anchors are the standard sliding-tether attachment. Quick Click connectors let you unclip the device from the helmet without unthreading anything, which matters a lot if you're getting in and out of a tight cockpit repeatedly, or doing driver changes. Functionally the protection is identical.

FIA or SFI? Check what your organization requires — some accept either, some name one. Devices like the Stand 21 Club 3 carry both, which removes the question entirely. If you run with multiple clubs, dual homologation is worth paying for.

Dates. FIA 8858-2010 devices don't carry an expiry on the device itself, but the tethers stretch and should be replaced per the manufacturer's schedule — replacement sliding tethers are about $53. SFI 38.1 certification runs five years and then needs recertification, which is inexpensive and usually includes new tethers. Many devices are dual-homologated to both.

5. The Helmet: The One Piece You Probably Already Own

Most HPDE drivers buy a helmet on day one and then never think about it again. Two things are worth thinking about.

Your certification may have expired. Snell updates its automotive standard every five years, and clubs typically accept the two most recent. As of January 1, 2026, SA2015 helmets are no longer valid at most events — New Jersey wrote it into state administrative code, and organizations across the country have aligned. If your helmet says SA2015, it's done. SA2020 and SA2025 are current. Our Snell vs FIA standards guide covers what each rating actually tests.

SA, not M. An automotive SA helmet is fire-rated, tested for roll-bar impact, and has the M6 inserts an FHR needs. A motorcycle M-rated helmet has none of that. And if you've had any impact at all — including dropping it in the paddock — replace it. The EPS liner crushes once, permanently, and it doesn't spring back.

Fit beats price. A helmet that's loose enough to rotate on your head is not doing its job, and neither is one so tight you can't focus after twenty minutes. Buy from a shape that fits your head; there's more on this in our helmet fitting guide.

What to Buy First: A Realistic Order

Nobody buys all of this at once. Here's how I'd sequence it now, knowing what I know.

Stage 0 — before you upgrade anything. A current SA2020 or SA2025 helmet, good gloves and shoes, and a properly mounted fire extinguisher. Keep the factory three-point belt and the factory seat — that's a complete, validated system and it's the right answer for a street car in a novice group. When you are ready to think about plumbed systems, our fire protection guide maps the whole progression.

Stage 0.5 — the upgrade almost nobody makes, and should. Add a three-point-compatible head and neck restraint like the Simpson Hybrid S. This is the one meaningful piece of crash protection you can add to a completely stock car without touching the seat, the belts or the chassis, and it addresses the injury that head and neck restraints were invented to prevent. If you're going to buy exactly one thing after reading this article and you're not ready to build the car, buy this.

Stage 1 — when the car becomes a track car. This is where the decision point is, and it's a package, not a shopping list: roll protection, seat, harness and a yoke-style FHR, planned together and installed together. If you can only fund part of it, fund the roll bar and keep the stock belts until the rest is ready. Do not do the harness first. A harness in a stock seat with no bar behind it is the single most common way people make their car less safe while believing they've made it safer.

Stage 2 — refinement. Passenger side matched to the driver side if you run instructors, window and arm restraints, a fire suit, and a proper bag so the helmet and FHR aren't rattling around in the trunk.

The Bottom Line

I've been telling people for years that safety gear matters. Then I watched myself hang out of a stock seat while my car slid upside down through the grass at Summit Point, and it stopped being a talking point.

Here's what I'd say to anyone running White or Blue, in a car they've been steadily making faster: the speeds you're carrying are real, the consequences don't scale with your run group, and a three-point belt in a stock seat is the equipment you had before you started going quickly. Roll protection first, then the seat, the harness and the restraint as one purchase. Get the helmet current. And if the full build is a year away, put a three-point-compatible head and neck restraint on your shoulders in the meantime — there is no reason to wait on that one.

I got lucky. The car was a write-off, the roof was inches from my helmet, and I walked to the ambulance under my own power. I don't intend to rely on luck again, and neither should you.
